Sangomas

In this day & age of fractured & fading traditions, the need to remember our roots is increasingly important. Remembrance is well illustrated by the sangomas of Khayelitsha.

Sangomas are the healers of the community - imparters of knowledge gained from the ancestors. In order for initiates to become sangomas, their ancestors must visit them in a dream. Once this rite of passage has been achieved, the celebrations last for three days & three nights.

Female sangomas are as prevalent as their male counterparts - their strength can clearly be seen in their singing, dancing & interaction with other participants.

During these sacred festivities, they celebrate life & reinforce the link between the past & the present. As an observer, sitting in the midst of the proceedings, the air of inclusion & welcome is tangible.
