In 2006 I worked on a photographic project focusing on women living & working positively with HIV/Aids. I chose to focus on women in the townships because women with HIV/Aids often do not have a voice, & their strength & courage is not recognised. They play a critical nurturing role within the family unit & I would like to promote this aspect of their lives. I photographed women living in the townships, who had made disclosure & spoken openly about their status despite the stigma attached to this.

These women's lives have changed positively because of their disclosure. Some have trained as councillors to help & educate those suffering from the illness. Others have resolved not to give up, so that they can continue in their essential care-giving roles within their families & communities. It is this spirit that I wish to reflect through my imagery. I spent time in their home environments getting to know them & their families in order to capture special moments. Through my photographs I wish to promote a deeper understanding & awareness that those living with HIV/Aids can lead very normal & positive lives regardless of their illness.
